Autism Spectrum Condition
Our aim is to empower children and young people with speech, language and communication needs to communicate as effectively as possible in everyday life
Ashna and her associates are committed to supporting individuals in achieving their own social goals, regardless of whether they have a formal diagnosis. Therapy is personalised, respectful, and collaborative, ensuring each person feels understood and supported.
Ashna has attended several courses and workshops, including the Social Thinking Programme (Michelle Garcia Winner) and Talkabout (Alex Kelly), and integrates these within a neuro-affirming framework. She is committed to ongoing professional
development in social cognition, regularly attending courses in UK. Ashna uses an eclectic mix of resources to support each student on their individual journey.
Sessions are typically offered on a 1:1 basis, either in clinic or online. Paired or small group sessions may also be available depending on individual needs. Collaborative working with families and education providers is an integral part of the therapy process, ensuring consistency and meaningful progress across environment
Therapy to Support Social Communication Skills
It is often assumed that if a student has strong receptive and expressive language skills, they will naturally be successful in social interaction and communication. However, research into social cognitive differences in autistic individuals shows that successful interaction relies on the ability to use language in a socially meaningful and flexible way. This is often referred to as pragmatic language, or the social use of
language.
Within therapy, a range of approaches may be used to support the development of social communication skills. For some students, a behavioural social skills approach may be helpful, particularly where there are differences in understanding one’s own and others’ perspectives. For others with more developed language and cognitive skills, a cognitive-behavioural framework may be used to build awareness and understanding of social communication, supporting them to learn and reflect on social interactions in a structured way.
